Every major advance in society has had a unique impact on women, and the Internet is no exception. This book will explore the ways women all over the globe are this resource to create communities, educate themselves and improve every facet of their lives. This book will profile between 20 and 40 women (or groups of women) who have an uplifting or compelling story about their Internet experience. The purpose of sharing these stories is twofold. First, there is a proliferation of negative information on the Internet. From pornography to identity theft, the Internet is rife with opportunity for dishonestly and crime. The stories in this book will focus on the positive uses for the Internet that women have found or created. Secondly, as technology advances make our planet ‘a smaller place,’ in essence, women have a unique opportunity to form alliances and support each other in a way that would be virtually impossible without the Internet. This book will attempt to inspire women to become part of this global community in order to enrich their lives both professionally and personally. Outline: I. Introduction: a brief outline of Women’s history demonstrating our natural desire to form communities and band together in unity for the good of our families, children and careers. Additionally, a brief introduction to the Internet. II. Community: The book will open with stories about one of the largest boons to the lives of women in history: the ability to form world-wide or neighborhood communities with ease. This section will contain stories about women who have used the Internet to create communities of like-minded women for the purposes of sharing information, emotional support and friendship. III. Activism and Education: Women have always advocated for their own well-being, and often they have been the first or only advocates on behalf of their children. The Internet has allowed women access to medical information previously unavailable without painstaking and exhaustive manual searches. Additionally, women have used the Internet to pursue continuing education while working or raising children. Educating themselves about every topic from child-rearing to politics has given women greater roles in their families, workplaces and communities. IV. Careers and Businesses: The Internet has provided a wonderful opportunity for women to become business owners and still fulfill their desires to care for their family. From selling their handmade goods via their own website to utilizing pre- made sites such as eBay, women are empowering themselves by earning an income in a variety of creative ways online. V. Conclusion: I hope to be able to inspire women to utilize the potential of the Internet for the benefit of themselves, their families and the planet. The potential for communicating with and supporting women from nearly every corner of our planet is still not entirely understood, but I believe that it is the responsibility of women to be at the forefront of every positive usage the Internet will afford us both now and in the future. © 2006 by Cheryl L.
